The aim of this thesis is to examine Archduke Johann's first spa retreat in Wildbad Gastein in 1822 and his influence on infrastructural developments in the Gastein valley over the following decades. The reconstruction of Archduke Johann’s stay is based on sources such as a letter addressed to Emperor Franz I, several newspaper articles, and Albert von Muchar's overview of the Gastein valley from 1834.
