On „bedauerliche Anträge einer gemischten Ehe“ – Lines of Argumentation and Practices of Catholic Clergy in the Context of Mixed Marriages before and after 1867 based on Civil Laws in Cisleithania

This paper uses original documents from the archives of the St. Jacob’s Cathedral parish to examine the arguments and actions of Catholic clergy in mixed marriages in Cisleithania before and after 1867. The legal reforms in constitutional and civil law in 1867 brought far-reaching changes to marriage law and to the relationship between the church and political rule. The effects of these legal reforms are analyzed at the micro level on the basis of parish records and presented in the context of the specific circumstances of the lives of priests and bridal couples.
