Staging in the Alps: “Ethnographic Exhibitions” in Tyrol in the First Half of the 20^th Century

This bachelor’s thesis examines the phenomenon of “ethnographic exhibitions” in Tyrol from the late 19^th century to the mid-20^th century. By analyzing 29 newspaper articles from the Tyrolean press, the study investigates the organization, commercialization, and societal impacts of these events. Using qualitative content analysis, it addresses cultural commodification, scientific discourse, exoticization, and the political context. The analysis highlights how these exhibitions reflected European stereotypes of “otherness” while contributing to the entertainment industry and reinforcing colonial narratives.
