‘…He Will Teach the Apprentice the Trade Completely as He Himself Knows It.’ About the Roman Apprenticeship Training in Handicrafts

The following seminar-paper contains a close examination of the available source material about the Roman apprenticeship training in handicrafts. On the basis of literary, legal and in particular epigraphical as well as papyrological sources an outline of the organization of the apprenticeship training primarily in the Principate should be given in order to gain deeper insight in some aspects of the ancient social and economic actualities. The appendix affords a tabular compendium of the epigraphical and papyrological sources.
